Babyboomers - please help. Song lyrics needed.

This is a long shot! I'm chasing the lyrics to a children's song possibly recorded in Britain in the 1960's.

My sister and I received a 45rpm vinyl recording around 1965. I'm not musically talented so I cannot give a technical description of the tune - other than to say it went something like this:

La Dah la la Daahhh
La Dah la la Daahhh
La Dah la la la la la Daaahhhh
etc etc

Now don't laugh - but here are the lyrics as best as I can remember:

One day in the park
the girls and the boys
could here a most pitiful cry

And who do you think
was making that noise
a monkey who wanted to fly!

He tried to make wings
from all sorts of things
he'd flap them and aim for the sky

He'd make the right sounds
and zoom! of the ground
but a crash-fall he coouldn't seem to fly

Ohhhh - poor monkey. Why do you want to fly?
"Well I'm not happy here - so I thought I'd go looking for Tony"
Whhoooo's Tony?

"Well Tony you see
was partners with me
a fine hurdy gurdy he'd play

And I would hold up
my little tin cup
we made a fine living that way

Then Tony said he
could do without me
although I shall never know why

So here on the limb
I cry about him
for what kind of business have I?"

Well - that's it. Any information you may have will really be appreciated.

thank you

Dear mchlsrls, I have the actual 45 rpm from the Cricketones! The verses where you have such as "He tried to make wings, etc." are "I tried to make wings..." (in other words, First Person instead of Third Person) and the one line is "But I'd crash for I can't seem to fly." Then one of the children says, "Oh, Poor Monkey! We can help you, can't we everybody?" The monkey replies, "But How?" Then there is an additional verse that goes like this:

We'll come every day,
We'll sing and we'll play,
And help you pretend it's old times.
You'll hold your tin cup,
And we'll fill it up
With pennies and nickels and dimes.

And then one thing more,
We'll go to the store,
A toy hurdy-gurdy to buy.
And you'll be our pet.
We're glad that we met
A monkey who wanted to fly!

Lyrics are by Marion Savage Rosette (1901-1991) who also wrote Katie the Kangaroo, another popular children's song.

Augh! I think there's a small glitch in my version of the lyrics, too, because a friend says that there is another little talking bit right after the bit where it says," And who do you think was making the noise, a monkey who wanted to fly" You see, the record is so old and scratched it skips. We're absolutely sure about those last two verses, though. We're getting closer!!! I've looked all over the net for these lyrics for my daughter with no luck till your letter brought it all back to me. Thanks so much!!!

I can't believe someone actually remembers this sog, I have been looking for the lyrics for 4 yrs! I found my 45 last night and listened to it all the lyrics posted are right the only thing that is missing is after the monkey but I'd crash for I cant seem to fly, he cries Birds fly bees fly flies fly why hi-hi-can't I fly
and then the kids say ohh poor monkey Why do you want to fly?
So yeah I'm so happy some one out there remembers this silly song!! I'm going to have my brother tape it and then try to burn it on a disc some how with what old equipment that we have LOL!!! My record doesn't skip but sounds scratchie!!
Any one remember a song about mixed up animal songs? A guy gets bit by a bug and he hears mixed up animal sounds called something like quack-a moo-bee-a quack-a- fobia!
I swearpeople think I'm nuts and I must be the only one in the world with these crazy 45!!!

Wow. I remember this one well. It was a bit bazaar when I was it at age four.....and it still is. I would love to somehow get the recording.

In the meantime, the same group, the Cricketones, recorded the Table Manner Tune. Does anyone have the full lyrics?

Here are some lyrics from what I remember.

Now gather 'round children we're three friends of value
We'll always be with you when you go to dine.
Just look on the table for a fork, knife and spoon-
Now they're gonna sing you the Table Manners Tune.

I'm Mister Fork with points so sharp
I'm good for holding meat
And if you handle me just right
I'm sure to help you eat
(it continues....)

If you remember what I said, you'll eat with ease and grace.
And mom and Dad won't be ashamed to take you any place.

(Mr. Knife takes over)
Now, I'm Mister Knife and I'm might handy but-
I'm only used at mealtime when you've got something to cut
(it continues...)

(Miss Spoon take over)

That sounds like another cute song---I didn't get that record when I was little...I feel deprived now!lol! Probably why I have no table manners today!!! If anybody is still on this thread please let me know if you find the lyrics to another song by Marian Savage Rosette who authored The Monkey Who Wanted to Fly. That song is Katie the Kangaroo and my daughter and I are still looking for that one to teach to my little granddaughter. Any help out there? Thanks! Siddigfan

Hi
I remember this too! The table manners!

Bits I remember:

I am Mr knife and I'm mighty hand but
(You wouldn't want me in your mouth and then have to be cut?)
Whenever you're not using me, against the plate I'm laid
My handle on the table, that's for balancing my blade

I am miss spoon and I come in three/all sizes
for soup and dessert and all sorts of surprises
You use me for stirring and eating ice cream
I'll pick up every drop and I'll leave your plate clean
